“Greatness is an obligation not an option! To whom will you be that emblem of greatness?”  I am Jayuntay Jermaine Williams, a native of Denmark, South Carolina.  On October 6, 1989, I was born to the proud Mr. and Mrs. Jeffery Williams Sr.  I successfully completed the requirements to graduate Denmark-Olar High School, where I earned the highest honor of Valedictorian.  Academic success has granted me the opportunity of being accepted to Claflin University on a full academic scholarship, currently having a 3.9 GPA.  I am an active member of the Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College, which has paved the way for me to become an active member of the community in which I reside.  I have volunteered at several elementary and middle schools, as my major is Middle Level Education.  Education is the key that unlocks the door of endless possibilities and I have accepted the challenge to change the face of the American education system.

As I have developed a passion to learn, I decided that college would be beneficial as I considered striving towards my passion of becoming an effective educator.  Claflin University extended its warm arms to my persistent being.  I am driven by the success and productivity of my fellow people and therefore, I made a vow to persist in my thoughts of becoming a teacher.  I have been given the opportunity to serve as a mentor to several individuals at the university level and extend my pre-service teacher training in becoming a leader in several organizations.  I currently serve as the Keeper of Records for the Gamma Nu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.  This position allows me to communicate with other leaders on campus and in the greater community to develop partnerships that will increase the number of positive individuals to guide positive interactive activities.  I have extended my services as a mentor and tutor to several schools and have served as an orator of my college experience.  Claflin University seeks to prepare students for leadership and service in a multicultural, global and Technological society. Through my involvement in the community and with the leadership training obtained throughout my matriculation, I am fulfilling the purpose and objective set out by the Claflin University Imperative.

While at Claflin University, I have received several honors.  I have earned the academic honors of making the President’s List and the Dean’s List.  All research topics of interest center education.  Such research interest include, “The Effects of Intrinsic Motivation in the Middle School”, “The Social Cognitive View of Motivation”, and “Parental Incarceration and Its Effects on a Child’s Social Development”.  I have presented at the 9th Annual Pedagogy Conference of Claflin University and the Carolina TESOL Conference during the fall semester of 2010.  I presented research, “The Effects of Intrinsic Motivation in Teaching English Language Learners.”  Through the School of Education at Claflin University, I have become a member of the Call Me Mister Program, The South Carolina Education Association and the National Professional Development Grant Program.  I have completed the Call Me Mister Summer Internship for two consecutive summers where I was an instructor of a summer enrichment program and received a distinguished service award.

I plan to graduate Summa Cum Laude in 2011 from Claflin University.  Following the completion of my Bachelor of Science Degree in Middle Level Education, I plan to begin teaching in a school of certified educators and pursue an advanced degree in the field of education, concurrently.  In ten years, I plan to begin implementing the framework for initiating my own school.  Establishing my own school will allow me to be able to continue to serve the community and increase the number of positive role models within the community.  It is my goal to continue to train and recruit minority male teachers and continue to diversify the teaching population.  Providing an education to young adults and awareness seminars to stress to importance of education will be essential and at the forefront of all endeavors that drive my future actions and aspirations.
