An effective teacher establishes, clearly communicates, and maintains appropriate expectations for student learning, participation, and responsibility.  In this context, the term participation refers to student effort.

Both the objectives and the agenda was updated daily.  This display was beneficial to the teacher in such a way that no instructional time was lost and to remind the teacher what it is that the students should be able to know/demonstrate/explain.

Encouraging Participation

Baby Bruin Points for Participation
To encourage active student participation, Baby Bruins were awarded to the groups that were actively listening, shared responses to open-ended questions and answered mastery questions correctly.  The goal was to receive at least 80 points each day.  If the students obtained an average of 80 or better by the end of the week, they were rewarded.

Number heads, a Success for All, Strategy was used to enhance student participation.  There were numbers placed on each desk and I would randomly call a number from a group for a response.  This strategy urged each students to be attentive because they could be called at any moment to share a response.
